Once she feels comfortable going on the pads regularly, if the situation changes and you need/want her house trained again, you may find that she will now potty inside the house anyway, and cannot be housetrained again, and even worse she does not differentiate pads from peeing on towels, blankets, rugs, etc…going forward. So I always advise against pad use, and certainly wouldn’t undo the efforts of a dog that is housetrained already! If you’re leaving her in a pen for over 12 hours this is a red flag for a possible bad situation. I hope you will consider an alternative like having a friend, neighbor, or dog walker come in 1–2x/day if you’re away working long hours. Or doggy daycare, or boarding. This is no way for a dog to live long-term. Dogs are social animals and living in isolation is hard on them. In other words… a responsible breeder doesn’t get into dog breeding to make a profit. They do it for the love of their chosen breed. So if you’re looking to raise Puppies for Profit – – DON’T. Done the right way, there’s not much profit in it and your motivation is all wrong if you are doing it to make money off your dogs. You end up adding to the shelter problem by treating your puppies as disposable items or canine cash machines. They are neither. Not sure why you’d want to teach a housetrained dog that it’s now OK to go in the house. She holds it because she’s learned not to potty inside the house as long as she physically can avoid it. It will probably continue like this for a while, until she realizes that this is “normal” now. Imagine if you were left with no toilet access for 12+ hours/day, how long would it take before you were comfortable peeing on a towel in the corner of the room instead of trying to hold it? If your intention is to leave the dog alone in a pen for 12+hrs/day for days at a time, please consider an alternative solution or even rehoming the dog if this is a long-term lifestyle change.
