I have always suffered from body dysmorphic disorder. My self loathing was evident even in my relationships; I had a stubborn tendency to stay with toxic people, even in physically abusive relationships. I developed an eating disorder known as bulimia nervosa in high school because an ex boyfriend convinced me I should make myself throw up because I was so “disgusting.” My mom found out about it and intervened. She watched me when I ate and wouldn’t let me go to the bathroom after. My eating disorder slowly tapered away, but the obsessive thoughts never seemed to stop haunting me. I started dating a 32 year old man when I was 19. He was by far the most manipulative and abusive person I’ve ever met. He would hit me and come up with some grand reason why it was my fault, but he was so charming that I was convinced I was the only one who could help him. He forced me to open up to him about my eating disorder, and he would use it as ammo every single time we would argue. He would call me fat, ugly, pathetic, tell me no one wanted me, that I was worthless, laugh at me etc. He made me relapse.
